QCINEMA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2015

After its successful 2014 run, the Quezon City Film Development Commission (QCFDC) will once again hold the QCinema International Film Festival to help filmmakers hone their craft, deliver critically-acclaimed films, maintain its status as the country's filmmaking capital and prove why QC should be called the "City of Stars".

Bigger and better than before, the festival will exhibit more than 50 high-quality films from around the globe and set film discourses from OCTOBER 22-31, 2015 at TRINOMA, GATEWAY MALL and ROBINSON GALLERIA. Ticket price is P150.00 each.

The following review will mostly be in Filipino but the verdict will be in English. Ang ironic kaya magsulat sa wikang Ingles tungkol sa pelikulang kontra-Amerika.

Sino nga ba si Antonio Luna? Isa raw siyang bayani noong Philippine-American War ayon sa HeKaSi teachers natin. Sinabi rin nila na maganda ang buhay, edukado at marangya raw tayo noong panahon ng mga Amerikano. Pero bakit nagkaroon pa rin ng mga bayaning katulad nila Luna, Sakay at Malvar? Bakit marami pa ring nagbuwis ang buhay? Hindi ka ba nagtataka?

INSIDE OUT

Pixar created worlds where living and inanimate objects interact, learn and feel like a human being. They've made us happy, sad and sometimes angry for the past two decades. This is perhaps the biggest and the most ambitious film that they have made in a long time. Did they pulled it off or is this just another disappointing attempt in recapturing their previous glory?

CINEMALAYA 2015 WINNERS AND 2016 FINALISTS

Martika Ramirez Escobar's Pusong Bato rocked the awards night for winning the grandest prize of the 11th Cinemalaya Film Festival. Finalists for next year's feature-length competition had just been announced at its closing ceremony.

Before the week comes to its final stop, here’s my take on the nine short film finalists for this year’s Cinemalaya Film Festival.

CINEMALAYA 2015 - BROADENING HORIZONS UPDATES AND SCREENING SCHEDULES

The 11th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition will open from August 7-15, 2015 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Greenbelt 3.

For this year, the competition will be held only in the Short Film category. The full-feature category will return on August 2016. Finalists will be announced soon according to the Cinemalaya fan page.

But don't get sad because the filmfest will still offer a variety of full-feature films in the following categories: The Independents: Asian Showcase, Indie Nation, Cinemalaya Retrospective, Indie Festival's Best, Documentaries, New Short Films in Exhibitions and Gawad CCP para sa Alternatibong Pelikula. The opening film will be Brillante Mendoza and Nora Aunor's Taklub. Closing it will be Silong starring Piolo Pascual and Rhian Ramos, directed by Jeffrey Hidalgo and Roy Sevilla Ho.

Para sa Breakup Playlist. She’s Dating the Breakup Playlist. Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Breakup Playlist Mo? Breakup Playlist Over Again. Iba’t ibang title, iba’t ibang bida, iba’t ibang quotable quote ngunit iisa lang halos ng atake. That Thing Called Star Cinema. Pero ibang klase din talaga sila Dan Villegas at Antoinette Jadaone. Pagkatapos ko mangamba para sa mga susunod nilang gagawin after E.O.P. at ma-umay sa You’re My Boss, nand’yan na naman sila, tinutukso-tukso ang aking puso.

STAND BY ME DORAEMON

(When the night has come and the land is dark)

For 23 years and still counting, Fujiko Fujio’s robotic feline became a Filipino habit for those who can still watch anime in the morning. It won the hearts of all ages because of its humor, values and futuristic gadgets. Unlike in other countries, we pronounce his name as “Do-Rei-Mon” and Takeshi is usually called “Damulag” (Tagalog term for huge kid). Luckily, I’m one of those kids who grew with the show. Loved a lot of episodes even if the plot is oftentimes the same. I only saw what’s aired in TV, probably half of the entire series, but this film made me relive those memories of wonder, fun and learning as if I was brought back through time.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

The second alliance of the world’s mightiest superheroes strives to outdo its epic predecessor by giving you more characters, more explosions, more subplots, more explosions, more backstories and more explosions. It’s still an entertaining beaut as it arises some interesting arguments on war, peace and artificial intelligence but after all is said and done, it’s still a prologue for the third phase of the Marvel cinematic universe.
