IT FOLLOWS (David Robert Mitchell): ★★★½☆
- Fans of the ole 80’s horror films will
love its subtle but visually haunting attack even if the last act diminished
its promising thrill. This movie also caters to hipster teens who feels enclosed
in their world today and let’s not forget those conservative parents who will
teach their daughters about abstinence. A good companion piece to Cabin in the
Woods and Cabin Fever for this slasher throwback generation.
THE DUFF (Ari Sandel): ★★★☆☆
- Mae Whitman’s commanding presence, together with the effective self-aware jokes and timely message, are enough to raise this almost direct-to-DVD romcom to an enjoyable companion piece to the likes of Easy A and Mean Girls.
EX MACHINA (Alex Garland): ★★★★½
-
A visually-polished and brilliantly-acted sci-fi that dissects the Turing Game
to introduce some thought-provoking ideas on science, attraction, sexuality,
humanity, artificial intelligence and God. What if we faced our Maker?
Will we embrace Him for giving life to us or fear His power of stripping it
from us? What does it mean to become human? Does this civilization that turns
machines into human is slowly turning us into machines? Will this be the
prologue for our extinction? So much questions that only time can tell. Let’s
just dance to Oliver Cheatham’s song and enjoy the wonderful films we have
today.
PITCH PERFECT 2 (Elizabeth Banks): ★★★½☆
- The encore wasn’t able to match the
vocal tenacity that made the sporadically entertaining predecessor a
sleeper-hit but it provided a livelier and a constantly engaging beat that made
it a more enjoyable film. There was a pacing issue in the first that I didn’t
feel in here. The humor is not for everyone, especially those who can’t handle
racist, sexist and fat-shaming jokes, but I was genuinely laughing every time
Elizabeth Banks, Rebel Wilson and especially John Michael Higgins were on
screen. Too bad that the other Bellas became one-note minor characters and that
the rip-off and finale performance aren’t close to the original.
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (Georgle Miller): ★★★★★
-
What a day, what a lovely day! This may sound a bit conclusive but Fury Road is
one of the best films I’ve seen and I encourage everyone to go see it!
It’s
supposed to be an action movie but damn! This shit made me shed tears because
of how beautiful it was made. Not only it delivers a one-of-a-kind ride of your
life, the film also serves as a hope not only for the franchise but also for
the Hollywood cinema as well.
Everyone
and everything was awesome but Nicholas Hoult (Nux) was the soul of the film,
for me. I won’t fight with those people arguing about Tom Hardy being a
secondary character. Maybe we’ll see his madness in the sequel and hopefully,
Charlize Theron (Furiosa) will be in it, too. The color brown never looked this
pretty. What a great balance of CGI, practical effects, stunt choreography and
cinematography. George Miller clearly showed that today’s technology is not a
hindrance but an aid for the movie industry and that flaming guitars are the
coolest things to bring during a wild chase.
Regarding
the feminist issue on the film, I don’t give a damn on what those radical
feminists (which is the 21st century version of misadrist) say. Fury Road is not about feminism. Those who say it is are too
focused on the ladies in it. The film is about universality to fight for a
cause, whether you’re a male, female, old, disabled, pregnant or a former enemy.
It’s not about Furiosa being superior to Max. Without Max, Furiosa will die and
vice versa.
Back
in the day, there were movies that are centered on strong female characters and
no bitter, self-righteous bitch called them “feminist”. These five films I’ve
mentioned see women as strong individuals, not as man-haters that these pseudo-feminists
are trying to promote. Take note that I’m only attacking the misandrists who are pretending to be feminists, especially
on social media, and not the REAL feminist movement who are ACTUALLY fighting
for the rights of their fellow women. I hope that this feminist-capitalist
gimmick will end soon because this is not healthy in achieving gender equality.
