BIG HERO 6

Ohayou Goodmorning-imasu!
Disney’s recent animated movies have a trend. Tangled then Wreck-It-Ralph then Frozen then this. While Wreck-It-Ralph is for gamers, Big Hero 6 are for the nerds, those who doesn’t have time to play videogames because they’re too busy experimenting stuffs and watching Big Bang Theory. It’s origin story is also for the comic book fans. Mixing things up with Marvel, this is the first action-packed Disney animation since The Incredibles but it didn’t fully commit to the two studios. It tried to mix them in a safe, crowd-pleasing way.

First stop: San Fransokyo. The only memorable place in it was the Japanese Golden Gate Bridge. Everything in it is above generic but not as innovative as Disney’s previous works. The story was also okay. Pacing was on and off. I strongly feel that they rushed the third act to make it to the Oscars season. The climax is the same as to Avengers’ although the vortex is facing the opposite way. I didn’t mind that. What bugged me was that there was no resolution for the real bad guy, the industrialist. There was no sense of security in this city. Technology risen but streets are still dark, police are impotent and damn! That car chase scene brought a lot of flaws to the movie. Clearly, no one was driving. No one saw the tsunami of black scraps. No media, no cops, no CCTV footages, nothing. This is the biggest flaw of the movie that many might not notice. However, the action was good, it's just so likable and it had one of the best Disney musical scores so far.

Baymax (Scott Adsit) is one of the cutest Disney characters of all time. I like his caring characteristic so much that I don’t want him to turn into a superhero. Baymax was unique but I’ve kinda seen the others. Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) reminds me of Nico from RPG Metanoia. Fred (T.J. Miller) is the cool Shaggy dude. Stay for the after-credits scene. Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) looks like Professor Trelawney. Go Go Tamago (Jamie Chung) is as feisty as that chick from How to Train Your Dragon. I like her Tron-like powers the most. Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.) looks like Shawn Wayans. I guess it runs in the family. Aunt Cass (Maya Rudolph) looks like an aged Rapunzel. Tadashi (Daniel Henney) is charismatic, Callaghan (James Cromwell) was okay and I hated Alistair (Alan Tudyk) from the moment I saw him.

Big Hero 6 is satisfying. Nothing more, nothing less. All of that is because of Baymax who carried the film and made us feel that we all need a hug. Even if the film is inferior to Rise of the Guardians and The Iron Giant, kids will love them and it has a good potential to have sequels or TV show.

BH6 deserves a BIG N’ TASTY 3.5/5!
